Looking to Add Attacking Pace, Netherlands Adds Verstappen at Forward for Knockout Stage
Head Coach Confirms Adrian Newey Has Already Started Designing Verstappen's Cleats
AMSTERDAM—Looking to strengthen its attack ahead of the World Cup knockout stage, the Netherlands national team announced Sunday that four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen will start at forward after coaches identified speed as the missing piece for the Dutch side.
Manager Ronald Koeman said the decision became obvious after reviewing hours of game tape.
“We need someone who will attack gaps before anyone realizes they’re there,” Koeman explained. “Max is not only known for speed but also for making impossible passes for years.”
Team officials confirmed Adrian Newey has already started designing Verstappen’s cleats, with early prototypes featuring an aggressive aerodynamic profile intended to improve corner speeds while reducing drag on counterattacks.
“We’re also experimenting with a flexi-sole,” said Newey. “Nothing illegal, just... difficult for FIFA to measure. They don’t have the tools for it.”
Coaches are optimistic the transition will be seamless. In addition to elite speed, Verstappen also brings proven defensive techniques such as forcing opponents off balance, initiating contact, and a kick powerful enough to hurt tires.
Verstappen’s people have already warned VAR that the volume of protests will increase, but they insist it’s probably just a knockout stage thing.
